On August 30, the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court in secret ballot elected the senator Inara Garda as the representative of the Supreme Court in the Board of Justice.
27 judges from 36 present judges of the Supreme Court voted for her.
Two candidacies were proposed for this post – the ex-Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the senator of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate Andris Gulans and the senator of the Department of Civil Cases Inara Garda.
Senators of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate, while proposing a candidature of Inara Garda, drew attention to her work experience, gained during period of work in courts of all levels – in district court, in regional court and in the Supreme Court. The Department of the Administrative Cases of the Senate, while proposing a candidature of Andris Gulans, also drew attention to his long-term experience of work in judicial system, and also stressed the fact that the ex-Chief of Justice since the beginning participated in development of idea about the Board of Justice, and this experience might be useful in work of the Board of Justice.
The Board of Justice has been formed in Latvia for the first time. The Board will be presided over by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The constant members of the Board of Justice are the Chair of the Constitutional Court, the Minister of Justice, the Chair of Juridical Committee of Saeima, General Prosecutor, and the Chairs of the Board of Sworn Advocates, the Board of Sworn Notaries and of the Board of Sworn Bailiffs. The composition of the Board of Justice also includes one judge elected by the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court and six judges elected by the Conference of judges.
