In accordance with Section 89.10 of the law ,„On Judicial Power", the work of the Judicial Council is ensured by the Secretariat of the Judicial Council, which is a structural unit of the Supreme Court.


In order to strengthen the management of the Judicial Council and to have an organisational and material framework appropriate to its objectives, competences and scope of activities, a solution was found in 2017 and a permanent support structure was established for the proper functioning of the Judicial Council - the Secretariat. Until the establishment of the Secretariat, the work of the Judicial Council was ensured by the Supreme Court Administration.     

  • ensuring the conduct of meetings of the Judicial Council;
  • preparing issues for consideration at the Judicial Council meeting;
  • drafting decisions, opinions, resolutions and other documents;
  • record-keeping of the Judicial Council;
  • organising the Latvian Judges Conference in cooperation with the Court Administration;
  • drafting and improving organisational guidelines, internal and external legal acts for the functioning of the judicial system;
  • conducting research on topical issues;
  • ensuring the work of the Working Group for Court Efficiency established by the Judicial Council;
  • maintaining the Judicial Council's communication with the public and the media;
  • maintaining the Council's international cooperation, including with the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary (ENCJ) and the European Commission;
  • representing the Judicial Council in cooperation with state and local government institutions, self-governing bodies of the judiciary, as well as international organisations.
