On March 10, the judges of the Constitutional Court elected Aldis Laviņš as the President of the Constitutional Court, and Irēna Kucina – as the Vice-President.

Consequently, Aldis Laviņš will also be a member of the Judicial Council.

When congratulating Aldis Laviņš on his election as the President of the Constitutional Court, Aigars Strupišs, the Chair of the Judicial Council and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, wished Aldis Laviņš the best of luck in leading an important work of the constitutional review body tasked with protecting the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia. "We have common goals – to promote the rule of law and democracy in Latvia by strengthening the independence of the judiciary," the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court said in a congratulatory message.

According to Article 89.1 of the Law on Judicial Power, the Judicial Council consists of 15 members – eight permanent members (officials) and seven elected members. The President of the Constitutional Court acts as a permanent member of the Judicial Council.

A permanent member (official) may authorize another person to participate in a meeting of the Judicial Council.
