In electronic elections of the Judicial Ethics’ Committee held on 20 May, seven from among nine necessary members to the Committee were elected. The second turn of elections will be held on Monday, 23 May.
Dzintra Amerika and Normunds Salenieks, judges of the Supreme Court, Alla Silova, the judge of Latgale regional court, Madara Abele, the judge of Riga district court, Guntars Plorins, the judge of Valmiera court house of the Administrative district court, Agnese Skulme, the judge of Land Registry office of Riga city Vidzeme suburb court, and Baiba Lielpetere, the judge of Land Registry office of Cesis district court, were elected as members to the Judicial Ethics’ Committee for next four years.
351 from among 567 Latvian judges participated in the first round of electronic elections. In accordance with Regulation of the Judges’ Conference, the candidate, who received majority of vote, is considered to be elected; in particular, at least 176 votes had to be received, so that the candidate would be elected.
Judges will have to elect two more members to the Committee – one from among candidates nominated by regional courts and one from among candidates nominated by district (city) courts. In repeated elections, judges will have to vote for candidates, who acquired majority of votes, including in voting list for one candidate more than number of vacant positions.
This May, the term of office of nine from among ten members of the Judicial Ethics’ Committee expires. The term of office of a member of the Judicial Ethics’ Committee is four years, and the member of the committee may not be elected for more than two consecutive terms.
