On 15 January 2018, one of the stages of the judicial territorial reform is completed – the Northern District Court is merged to Vidzeme District Court by reducing the number of first instance courts in Riga.

The Council for the Judiciary has determined the number of judges in district (city) courts and in their respective Land Register Offices. As from 15 January, the number of judges in the Riga courts of first instance has been determined: 43 judges in District Administrative Court, 30 judges in Riga City Latgale District Court, 28 judges in Riga City Pardaugava Court, 44 judges in Riga City Vidzeme District Court and 20 judges in its Land Register Office, 30 judges in Riga District Court of and 13 judges in its Land Register Office.

Altogether in Latvia, the courts of first instance now have 405 judges – 328 judges in district (city) courts and 77 judges in their Land Registry Offices.

By 1 March 2018, the judicial territorial reform will be completed also in the courts of Vidzeme, Zemgale and Kurzeme.

The Council for the Judiciary adopted the decision in the sitting of 15 January 2018 in a written procedure.
