On Tuesday, March 22, at the sitting, the deputies of the Legal Affairs Committee of the Saeima (Parliament) decided that the Committee shall be chaired by Jānis Butāns.
A new chair of the Committee has been elected because the current chair of the Committee Juris Jurašs has resigned.
According to the Law “On Judicial Power”, the chair of the Legal Affairs Committee of the Saeima is one of the eight permanent members of the Judicial Council.
The Judicial Council consists of eight permanent members - the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the President of the Constitutional Court, the Prosecutor General, the Minister of Justice, the Chair of the Legal Affairs Committee of the Saeima (parliament), the Chair of the Council of Sworn Advocates, the Chair of the Council of Sworn Notaries and the Chair of the Council of Sworn Bailiffs.
