In the second turn of elections of the Judicial Ethics’ Committee held on 23 May, Dace Skrauple, the judge of Zemgale regional court, and Inara Jaunzeme, the judge of Jurmala court house of Riga district court, were elected as members to the Committee. Thus, the Judicial Ethics’ Committee may start work in new composition.
In the first turn of elections held on 20 May, Dzintra Amerika and Normunds Salenieks, judges of the Supreme Court, Alla Silova, the judge of Latgale regional court, Madara Abele, the judge of Riga district court, Guntars Plorins, the judge of Valmiera court house of the Administrative district court, Agnese Skulme, the judge of Land Registry office of Riga city Vidzeme suburb court, and Baiba Lielpetere, the judge of Land Registry office of Cesis district court, were elected as members to the Judicial Ethics’ Committee for next four years.
The composition of the Judicial Ethics’ Committee also includes Anita Kovalevska, the judge of the Administrative regional court, whose term of office has not expired yet.
Elections to the Judicial Ethics’ Committee were held extramurally, in electronic way. In order so that the candidate would be elected to the Committee, he or she had to receive majority of votes. In the first turn, two candidates failed to acquire it, therefore, the second turn of elections was organised.
351 from among 567 Latvian judges participated in the first turn of elections, and 291 judges participated in the second turn.
The Judicial Ethics’ Committee is an institution of judicial self-government, which provides opinions regarding interpretation and violations of norms of ethics, and explains norms of judicial ethics. The term of office of a member of the Judicial Ethics’ Committee is four years, and members of the Committee may not be re-elected for more than two consecutive terms.
