24 March, 2023

On Friday, March 24, the Judicial Council decided that from July 1, 2023, the Daugavpils Court will be merged with the Rēzekne Court, thus changing the name of the court to the Latgale District Court.

The reorganization of the courts of Daugavpils and Rēzekne is a continuation of the territorial reform of the courts that was started in 2016, and it is being carried out in order to increase the efficiency of the courts and ensure the balancing of the workload of judges of the two courts.

The Judicial Council emphasizes that as a result of the reorganization, the accessibility of courts to citizens will not be affected and courts will be available in their current locations, as well as citizens will have the opportunity to submit documents to any of the currently existing addresses of courts.

The courts reorganization plan was developed by the Ministry of Justice in cooperation with Judicial Council’s Working Group on Strengthening the Court Efficiency.

The Judicial Council also established main theme of the Latvian judges' conference on May 19, 2023 which shall be "The right to a fair trial: the interaction of court instances".
