According to the Law “On Judicial Power”, the head of the Judicial Council is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Consequently, as of June 16, 2020, when Aigars Strupiss becomes the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, he also becomes the Chair of the Judicial Council.

Aigars Strupiss has been working in the Judicial Council since 2018, when he was elected by the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court.

As Aigars Strupiss becomes the ex officio Chair of the Judicial Council, the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court will have to appoint an elected member of the Judicial Council from among the judges of the Supreme Court.

The Judicial Council consists of eight permanent members – the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the President of the Constitutional Court, the Prosecutor General, the Minister of Justice, the Chair of the Legal Affairs Committee of the Saeima, the Chair of the Council of Sworn Advocates, the Chair of the Council of Sworn Notaries and the Chair of the Council of Sworn Bailiffs.
