Hereby the Judicial Council clarifies the information that has reached the public space regarding the fact that the Judicial Council will assess several judgments which provide for overly mild penalties, and the Council points out that the Head of the Judicial Council and the Supreme Court, Aigars Strupišs, in an interview with Latvian Television indicated that attention will be paid to the issue of penalties in corruption and in national security cases, which does not mean that the Judicial Council will reconsider specific court judgments. Judgments can only be reconsidered under appellate procedure. Inspection is required only if there are circumstances indicating a possible disciplinary violation. Currently, such conditions have not been found, but there are concerns about the penal system in general in cases that relate to state threats.
Furthermore, the working group established by the Judicial Council conducts an in-depth analysis of judicial work in cases related to domestic violence and threats to a person's life and health.
