On Friday, 17 January, the Judicial Council adopted a decision to delegate the Academy of Justice to submit an application for participation in the European Judicial Training Network.

The European Judicial Training Network is a European Union organisation that promotes the training and professional development of people working in the judiciary throughout Europe. The Network provides opportunities for judges, prosecutors and other members of the judiciary to develop their knowledge and skills, thereby contributing to the smooth and efficient functioning of judicial systems based on respect for European Union law.

The Judicial Council also adopted decisions on judicial career issues.

Gvido Ungurs, Judge of the Riga Regional Court was transferred to the post of judge of the Supreme Court as of 3 February 2025. Judge Gvido Ungurs applied in an open competition for the post of Senator of the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court. The General Assembly of Senators of the Senate’s Department of Civil Cases gave a positive opinion on the candidacy of Judge Gvido Ungurs.

The Judicial Council also appointed Judge Sanita Babre as Acting Deputy President of the Vidzeme District Court for the duration of the absence of Gunta Rezgoriņa, Deputy President of the Vidzeme District Court.

In accordance with the law, the Academy of Justice ensures international cooperation with training providers for judges and prosecutors, as well as participates in international projects within its competence.

The Judicial Council, on the basis of a proposal by the President of the Supreme Court and a positive opinion of the general assembly of senators of the relevant Senate’s department, decides on the transfer of a judge to the position of a judge of the Supreme Court.

The selection procedure of a president of district (city) court, of a president and deputy president of a regional court, and a president of courthouse stipulates that, if the term of relevant judicial office, as laid down by law, has expired, the Judicial Council shall, on the proposal of the Court Administration, appoint an acting president from among the deputy presidents, or, if there are no deputy presidents, from among the judges of the court concerned.
