By an overwhelming majority, in the electronic conference on the September 18 the judges expressed their support for the proposal that the chairs of district (city) and regional courts should be appointed by the Council for the Judiciary after the proposal of the general meeting of judges for a term of five years.
Currently, according to the Law "On Judicial Power", the chairs of district (city) courts are appointed by Council for the Judiciary after the proposal of the Minister of Justice.
The judge's survey on the issue of changes in the procedure for appointing the chairs of the courts was carried out on the proposal of the judge of the Riga Regional Court Juris Stukans at the Latvian Judges’ Conference on September 7. The majority of judges wanted such a question to be included in the agenda of electronic conference of judges along with electronic elections of the judiciary self-governing bodies.
