This year's Latvian Judges Conference taking place on Friday, November 1, will be dedicated to the topicalities of judicial work and judicial self-government institutions.
Latvian judges will be addressed by Egils Levits, the President of Latvia, Janis Bordans, the Minister of Justice, and Ramin Gurbanov, the President of the Council of Europe’s Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ).
The baseline report on the last year’s work of the Council for the Judiciary and the latest developments in the judiciary will be given by Ivars Bickovics, Chair of the Council for the Judiciary.
Maris Vigants, Chair of the Judicial Qualification Committee, will speak about current issues in the evaluation of professional activity of judges. Peteris Dzalbe, Chair of the Judicial Disciplinary Committee, will discuss topicalities in the field of judges’ disciplinary liability. Alla Silova, Chair of the Judicial Ethics Commission, will inform about the new draft Ethics Code for Latvian Judges. The participants will also hear the views of the candidates for Council for the Judiciary on the work of the Council – judges will then have to select one member of the Council for the Judiciary from among judges of district (city) courts at the extramural conference.
The second part of the Conference will be dedicated to the areas of law, namely, civil, criminal and administrative laws, and these sections will be led by the representatives of the relevant department of the Supreme Court.
The Latvian Judges Conference is a self-government institution convened by the Council for the Judiciary at least once a year. Judges from the district (city) courts, regional courts and the Supreme Court participate in the conference. Members of the Council for the Judiciary, judges of the Constitutional Court and Judges Emeritus are invited to the conference.
