24 October, 2014

On Monday, October 27, extraordinary sitting of the Council for the Judiciary has been convened to review request of the Legal Affairs Committee of the Saeima (Parliament)   to provide an opinion on the draft law “Amendments to the law “On Judicial Power”” until 27 October.

The draft law, which is envisaged to be advanced in urgent procedure for the second – final reading at the sitting of the Saeima of October 30, includes significant issues regarding further career of judges of Chambers of the Supreme Court after expiration of term of operation of the Chamber of the Supreme Court and annexation of Sigulda court and Riga city Centre district court to other courts. The Council for the Judiciary had previously expressed its conceptual support to merging of courts, however, issue regarding further career of judges of Chambers of the Supreme Court was not reviewed by the Council for the Judiciary before.

The Council for the Judiciary received the letter by the Saeima on 22 October, and it contains request for the opinion of the Council for the Judiciary to be announced until 27 October. Taking into account that, in accordance with regulations of the Council for the Judiciary, it is impossible to convene a sitting in presence in such short term, members of the Council for the Judiciary were asked to express their opinion in written procedure. However, observing importance of questions, majority of members of the Council for the Judiciary believed that those must be reviewed in a sitting in presence. That is why the extraordinary sitting of the Council for the Judiciary is convened on 27 October.

The extraordinary sitting of the Council for the Judiciary will be held in Room 461 of the Supreme Court, the beginning is at 14.00 o’clock.
