The Council for the Judiciary heard proposals of the Court Administration for judicial system evaluation to be carried out within the framework of project "Justice for Development" and supported by European Social Fund.

Evaluation of judicial system shall include three directions – evaluation of the judicial system (performance and quality), evaluation of the insolvency regulation (evaluation of the reforms undertaken) and the evaluation of commercial law. For elaboration of the evaluation of the judicial system it is planned to involve the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ).

The Council for the Judiciary approved the range of topics that are to be studied to carry out the evaluation, such as judicial communication, ethics, organizational and other issues.

Evaluation will include an independent analysis of the judicial system in Latvia, as well as recommendations for its improvement and modernization. This will be the basis for elaboration of comprehensive legal system improvement plan and possible amendments to legislation.

The Council for the Judiciary reviewed an issue in the sitting of 12 September.
