Eight candidates have applied for the position of Prosecutor General announced by the Judicial Council.

 The Secretariat of the Judicial Council will check whether the submitted documents certify the compliance of each applicant with the requirements set forth in Section 36 of the Office of the Prosecutor Law, i.e. age, citizenship, education, length of service, and other requirements.

 In case the applicants comply with the set requirements, it shall be required that the opinion of the Constitution Protection Bureau on compliance with the requirements specified in the Law “On Official Secret” for obtaining a special permit for access to state secrets is provided.

Applicants who do not meet the requirements set forth in Section 36 of the Office of the Prosecutor Law or who have not received a positive opinion will not participate in the further course of the competition.

The Prosecutor's Office development concepts submitted by the applicants who will receive a positive opinion of the Constitution Protection Bureau will be published on the website of the Supreme Court and on the portal of the Official gazette of the Republic of Latvia “Latvijas Vēstnesis” and they will be invited to a meeting of the Judicial Council.

The candidate who will receive the majority of votes of the members of the Judicial Council will be nominated for approval in the Saeima (parliament) for the position of the Prosecutor General.

The term of office of the current Prosecutor General, Eriks Kalnmeiers, expires on 11 July.
