The Council for the Judiciary, at its meeting on Monday, February 10, will discuss how to identify and address the factors that affect the long delays in individual court proceedings.

Although the time-limits of legal proceedings in Latvia are generally shorter than average in the European Union, there are some court proceedings that are disproportionately long. The issue of reducing the long deadlines for these individual cases has already previously been raised by the Council for the Judiciary.

A working group set up by the Council for the Judiciary in order to develop new procedures for the selection of candidates for the position of district (city) court and regional court judges will inform on progress and outline the new procedure.

The appointment of several chairs and deputy-chairs of courts, as well as other issues are also on the agenda of the Council for the Judiciary.
