On Monday, July 17, Aigars Strupišs, the Chair of the Judicial Council and the President of the Supreme Court, met with Edgars Rinkēvičs, the President of Latvia, to discuss the topicalities of the judiciary and the Judicial Council.

In the conversation with the State President, Aigars Strupišs emphasized that one of the main priorities of the 2021-2025 Judicial Council performance strategy is strengthening the independence of the judiciary. The State President expressed his support for the implementation of this priority, and the state officials discussed the further legal and organizational steps for its implementation.

"I am truly glad for this first conversation and for the President's understanding of the status of the judiciary in the system of Latvian constitutional bodies. I am sure that our dialogue will be successful and it will make a significant contribution to strengthening the rule of law in Latvia," emphasized A. Strupišs, Chair of the Judicial Council and the President of the Supreme Court.

The two state officials also discussed the necessity of clarification of court judgments, the penal policy in corruption and national security cases, as well as the new judges’ selection procedure and the improvement of judges’ training in the context of the Academy of Justice project.

The State President accepted an invitation to attend a meeting of the Judicial Council.
