15 February, 2024

On Friday, February 16, Aigars Strupišs, the Chair of the Judicial Council of Latvia, will participate in the Board meeting of the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary (ENCJ) in Paris (France). At the meeting, it is planned to discuss the work plan of the ENCJ for 2024 and the programme of the General Assembly.

One of the most important projects of the ENCJ in 2024 is the development of good practice guidelines for ensuring the attractiveness of a judge's career. Surveys demonstrate that not only in Latvia, but also in majority of other ENCJ Member States, there appear certain difficulties in attracting the best lawyers to the career of a judge. Aigars Strupišs and a representative of the High Council of Justice of Belgium are the coordinators of this project.

This year, the General Assembly will take place from June 12 to 14 in Rome (Italy). Every year, the General Assembly discusses topical issues of the judiciary, examines the work plans of the ENCJ and presents the results of working groups.

It has already been reported that on June 7, 2023, Aigars Strupišs, the Chair of the Judicial Council, was elected to the ENCJ Board as a representative of the Judicial Council of Latvia. This is the first time that a Latvian representative has been elected to the ENCJ Board. Aigars Strupišs shall carry out his duties as a member of the ENCJ Board until the ENCJ General Assembly in 2025 takes place.

Additional information:

The ENCJ is an organization that unites institutions representing the judiciaries of the Member States of the European Union (EU) which are independent of the legislature and the executive. The purpose of the establishment of ENCJ is to promote the cooperation of the Judicial Councils of the EU Member States, the mutual exchange of experience and the analysis of shared information. Latvian Judicial Council has been a member of ENCJ since 2011. More information about ENCJ is available here.
