In the sitting of March 10, the Board of Justice unanimously supported candidacy of Aldis Lavins, the judge of the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court, to the office of a judge of the Constitutional Court.
Candidacy of Lavins was nominated from among judges by the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court.
Lavins pointed out that it was Gunars Kutris, the former Chair of the Constitutional Court, who addressed and encouraged him to stand for the office of a judge of the Constitutional Court. The judge accepted this challenge as opportunity to perfect himself, to supplement his knowledge and experience, giving his contribution to work of the Constitutional Court also. Being asked about continuation of doctoral studies, Aldis Lavins answered that he would try to combine judge’s work with doctoral studies and he didn’t plan to change subject of his doctoral thesis, which was about efficiency of cassation institution in Latvian civil procedure. His intention is to come back to the Supreme Court after expiration of term of office of a judge of the Constitutional Court.
Inara Garda, the member of the Board of Justice and the judge of the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court asked to support candidacy of Aldis Lavins, although the Department of Civil Cases is sorry to lose a colleague, who is fair, professional judge, whose rulings are very substantiated, who develops professional discussions in the department, defending his opinion justly, at the same time listening to and accepting opinions of others.
Vacant position of a judge appeared in the Constitutional Court, because term of office of Aija Branta, the Chair of the Constitutional Court, expires. Branta was approved in the office of the Constitutional Court 10 years ago upon proposal of the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court.
Judges of the Constitutional Court have been approved by the Saeima (the Parliament), having listened to the opinion of the Board of Justice.
