Arturs Freibergs, the judge of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court, was elected to the office of a member of the Judicial Qualification Committee in extramural Judges’ Conference held on 2 March.

317 judges from among 555 judges participated in electronic elections, which were organised in accordance with election plan approved of the Council for the Judiciary.

Elections of the representative to the Judicial Qualification Committee were organised to elect a judge of the Department of Criminal Cases as a representative to the Judicial Qualification Committee due to liquidation of the chamber.

Arturs Freibergs was the only candidate to the office of the representative of the Judicial Qualification Committee; other nominated candidates did not approve their participation.   

In accordance with the law “On Judicial Power”,  the Judicial Qualification Committee consists of one judge of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court, one judge of the Department of Civil Cases, one judge of the Department of Criminal Cases, one judge of the panel of civil cases of a regional court, one judge of the panel of criminal cases of a regional court, one judge of the Administrative regional court, two judges of district (city) courts and one judge of the Land Registry office. The Judicial Qualification Committee is elected by the Judges’ Conference in secret vote.
